Chapter 11
He might have been looking at Sylvia, but I suspected his words were intended for me.
I was half tempted to take offense at his controlling manner, except that I knew how much Rafe cared for me. Besides, I wasnât interested in Vikram. But a girl could look, couldnât she?
There were a couple of people I knew who might have stayed in touch with Pamela. I chose to start with Sarah Levinson, as she had been one of the key organizers of our tenth anniversary high school reunion. I hadnât been able to attend, obviously, since I was living in England, but I was pretty sure that Sarah kept up with everybody. I sent her a quick email, and she got back to me flatteringly quickly. I said it had been such a long time since I had caught up with anybody from back home that I wondered if she had some time to Skype. She sounded delighted to hear from me, and we set a time the following day for my evening and her afternoon.
If anyone would know what Pamela had been up to in the ten years since we had left school, Sarah would. Or if not knowing herself, sheâd know someone who did.
Of course, since I hadnât attended my tenth year high school reunion, and I knew what a gossip Sarah was, I dressed myself and did my makeup and hair for my Skype catchup chat, putting almost as much effort as I would have had I actually gone to the ten-year reunion. No doubt sheâd be telling everyone we knew that sheâd caught up with me, and I didnât want her telling them how badly Iâd aged.
When we connected, I felt suddenly transported back to high school, to metal lockers that banged and gossiping in the girlsâ bathroom. Sarah looked genuinely thrilled to see my face. Like me, sheâd gone to a lot of trouble with her appearance. At the same time, we said, âYou look great!â
She was a little rounder in the face, and her hair was a more stylish version of the long, straight curtain sheâd worn a decade earlier, but she was otherwise the same. It was like falling back in time. âLucy. Itâs been so long. Where have you been? What are you up to? Tell me everything. How are you? I heard you had a kind of breakdown after Todd. You went all the way to England!â
Seriously? That was the word? Oh, I was glad I was talking to the biggest gossip my high school had ever seen. I straightened her right out. âTodd was an ass, and I am so much better off without him.â All true.
I told her I loved my life in Oxford. Also true.
âAnd are you seeing anyone?â she asked in that soft, pitying tone people use when they suspect youâll die alone surrounded by a couple of dozen cats.
I could tell her I was being wooed by the most incredible man, perfect in every way but one.
